Domestic Services, Royal Victoria Hospital
I had no qualifications and thought I was stupid
I left school at 15 and started work here when I was 17 years old. I had no qualifications and thought I was stupid. I didn’t realise I had dyslexia but through UNISON I achieved a ‘Return to Learn’ certificate. I went on to complete a computer course which was fantastic. The tutor was brilliant and I got loads of support. I was encouraged that I knew that I wasn’t stupid. I feel more confident now that I have something behind me – I’m not looking to move jobs but it’ll help me in the long run. I’ve got myself a very basic computer to keep practising.
Since completing the course I have contacted my local college and arranged to start an English and Maths course in the new year. I feel that I have achieved a personal challenge and plan to keep going. I’m not stupid any more. This year I went on the UNISON weekend away for people who work in cleaning and domestic services. It was very good, just listening to other cleaners from schools and hospitals and discussing how important our work is, even though sometimes we feel invisible.
