Jackie Casey is Course Director for the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy programme at the University of Ulster. She is Book Review editor for the journal of the Children, Young People and Families Specialist Section of COT. She will be providing a session on writing book review.
In preparation for the Book Review session, participants should submit the following in advance:
Book Review:
Choose a book that you have recently read to inform your practice and wtite a short review.
For those who may be unfamiliar with book reviews, the following guidelines may be useful: reviews should be typed; and begin with the title of the book; name(s) of the author(s) and/or editor(s); name of the publisher; date of publication; and ISBN reference number (the ISBN number can usually be found on the spine, the back cover or one of the front pages).
Example: The Penguin Dictionary of Surnames. Brian Cottle. 4th ed. Penguin 1989. 250pp.ISBN 014 051 032 x.
It is helpful to the reader if the review presents a brief, objective summary of the book as well as giving a personal judgement. It should also indicate whether any fresh viewpoints are offered and to what extent the ideas are developed in a clear, logical argument and a readable style.
The reader of a book wants, briefly, to know what the book is about and its good or bad points: is it a book to buy, borrow from a library or note for future reference. Please confine your review to 300 -350 words, unless a longer one is absolutely necessary.
For the purpose of this workshop – please omit any details that could identify you.
