K100 recruiting in Western Trust

6 Dec 2007

We are delighted that the Western Trust has agreed to work in partnership to offer the Open University K100 course. The course will run from February to October 2008 in Derry and Omagh/Enniskillen (depending on numbers)

The Open University K100 course offers a broad foundation in health and social care. It gives a grounding in the knowledge, skills and understanding required in caring work of all kinds – paid or unpaid, voluntary or professional – and also explores the perspective of users of care services.

K100 is a stand-alone qualification, providing underpinning knowledge for NVQ Level 3&4 in Care, and is mapped to the Knowledge & Skills Framework. At the same time it prepares you for further study towards a diploma or degree. It is also a compulsory module in a number of OU diploma and degree programmes including Nursing, Social Work (not currently recognised in NI), BA in Health & Social Care and BA in Childhood and Youth Studies. Workplace pre-reg nurse training is currently available through the OU, UU and QUB, but completion of the K100 does not guarantee a place on the programme. You also need a level 2 maths qualification to apply for the nurse training course.

UNISON Northern Ireland has developed a Study Skills for K100 course which runs alongside the Open University course. We also offer an additional Exam Revision and Preparation day.
