New Learning Opps in West Belfast

UNISON is in partnership with the Royal, Mater and North & West Belfast Trust to support access to health service jobs for long term unemployed people through the local Job Assist Centres. A key element of the project is to also support job training and progression opportunities for those who already employed in the Trusts. Admin, essential skills, BICS and ILM courses are all available.

Essential Skills through IT (16 weeks x 3 hrs)

A course to help improve your confidence with English and learn basic computer skills. You can get a qualification up to Level 2, which is comparable to GCSE/OLevel English grade C. It may be useful if you would like to take on an NVQ but lack confidence around writing skills.

Improving Your Numeracy (16 weeks x 3 hrs)

Do you fumble with figures, get confused with calculations? Would you like to be able to help the kids with their homework, then this course might be for you. You can get a qualification up to Level 2, which is comparable to GCSE/O’Level Maths grade C. It is accepted by the Open University and University of Ulster for entry into their nursing courses.

Medical Audio Transcription (10 weeks x 3 hrs) OCR Level 2

This course is suitable for those following programmes in administration and for those already employed in text processing and admin related job roles. The course includes Audio transcriptions; Transcribing recorded material containing interpolations and corrections; Interpreting verbal instructions and understanding audio conventions; Business and medical terminology

Medical Word Processing (10 weeks x 3 hrs) OCR Level 2

Participants will be required to have Stage 1 Text Processing or keyboarding skills. The course will include Production of business documents; Reading and transcribing variable quality manuscript and drafts; Planning layout of work within a variety of formats; Interpreting written instructions; Medical terminology; Creation of standard referral letters from a phrase file; Proofreading and error correction techniques;

Teeline Shorthand (10 weeks x 3hrs) OCR Level 1

This course will provide basic Teeline skills necessary for reporting, making notes or taking minutes. It covers the basic alphabet, word groupings and special outlines. The foundation of knowledge and understanding ensures that speed building can start as early as possible. Homework will be set each week and candidates must be prepared to study at home. Daily practice is advised.

British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICS) Proficiency Cert (12 hours plus assessment)

This qualification is intended to set an objective standard competence assessment for staff in domestic services, catering, ward and bedside with respect to cleaning. A cleaning operator who has been awarded the certificate would be regarded as being fully trained and competent with respect to the tasks they have completed.

BICS Assessor’s Award (2 days plus assessment)

This will enable those who already hold the BICS Proficiency Cert to become assessors and support other people to gain their certificate. This qualification will provide participants with the skills and competencies to enable them to assess cleaning staff and deliver basic training to national standards as specified by the British Institute of Cleaning Science. The course however commitment to assess ongoing work would be on an agreed basis

Waste Awareness Cert (1 day)

The Waste Awareness Certificate (WAC) is a relatively new course lasting one day tailored to specific employers to raise awareness in good waste management practices in order to safely and legally dispose of most waste types. The course is accredited by WAMITAB the waste management training and advisory board and recognised by the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM).

ILM Introductory Certificate in Team Leading (4 days / 8 half days)

ILM Team Leading qualifications are for those people who are working in formal teams or groups, whether as current or aspiring team leaders or coordinators, or as team members. It includes exploring issues such as the role of the team leader; developing yourself; motivating the team and communicating within the team. It provides an introduction to team leading/coordinating skills and is equally valuable for all those who work inside today’s teams.

These courses will start from mid March - April.
Backfill can be available for line managers to facilitate release.
These courses aim to enhance staff opportunities to progress within their current field or change direction.
