K100 Graduation in the Waterfront Hall

A very successful graduation event took place of UNISON members who had completed the Open University K100 course. Members from Sperrin Lakeland Trust, Mater Hospital, Royal Hospitals, South & East Belfast Trust, Greenpark Trust, Newry & Mourn Trust, Ambulance Service, North & West Trust and Craigavon & Banbridge Community received certificates from Professor Shirley Reveley, Dean of the Open University.

The key note speaker David Bingham from the Department of Health, Social Services & Public Safety congratulated the graduates and expressed delight that some had already progressed onto the Open University Pre-Reg Nursing diploma. William Mc Master, Anne Malanaphy, Shauna Brunty and Sinead Gormley all spoke about their experience in undertaking the course with support from UNISON and their employer and how it has impacted on their practice and enabled them to undertake new opportunities. Patricia Mc Keown, Regional Secretary with UNISON highlighted the importance of UNISON’s committment to promoting learning and what it achieves for individual members.

The K100 Understanding Health & Social Care course is run by the Open University. UNISON has set up an intiative which works in partnership with employers for students to gain release from work to attend, students also get a specially written Study Skills course and an exam preparation day.
