Solidarity - Find out how you can help - Feb 23

6 Feb 2007

We are delighted to invite John McFadden from UNISON, who has been working in South Africa, supporting trade unions and anti-poverty projects. Also this event will feature speakers from Cuba Solidarity and Free Palestine. In some countries, it is illegal to join a trade union, in others trade unionists are routinely murdered defending the rights of their members. This is a chance to find out more about what’s going on and what you can do.

Solidarity work - Solidarity means speaking out when fellow trade unionists are under threat - in Colombia, Burma or Zimbabwe, for instance. Solidarity also means helping sister trade unions to build their organisations on their own terms. Recent projects have included working with unions in Serbia, Palestine and Iraq to develop their organisations and working with unions in Southern Africa in their struggle against HIV/AIDs.

Trade unions have been involved with the Making Poverty History & Fair Trade campaigns as well as campaigns highlighting the exploitation of workers overseas and the HIV/AIDS.

This event takes place in the UNISON office from 10am - 4pm on Friday February 23rd.
