Essential Skills - Maths & English

10 Dec 2006

Essential Skills through IT and Essential Skills Numeracy can give you an opportunity to get an English and Maths qualification, which is comparable to a C grade in GCSE/O’Level. Many members have benefited from these courses already, with more confidence in writing reports, understanding written instructions, helping kids with homework, working out calculations such as percentages and ratio.

The Numeracy course at Level 2 is accepted by both the Open University and University of Ulster to meet the Maths requirement for nurse training. Courses are now running across Northern Ireland, some are being run in partnership with employers, so you can get time off.

The following Health Trusts are currently recruiting for courses
Greenpark Trust
Royal Hospitals Trust
South & East Trust
Armagh & Dungannon Trust
Altnagelvin Trust
Foyle Trust United Hospitals Trust
Sperrin Lakeland Trust
Craigavon & Banbridge Trust

There may be waiting lists for these courses and time off will be subject to permission being given from your line manager.

UNISON also intend to run courses locally in member’s own time if we get sufficient interest. This may suit people working in education, community and voluntary sector or private nursing providers. We currently are planning courses in January for Belfast, Derry, Newry, Omagh, Coleraine, Limavady, Armagh and Ballymena. Other locations will be considered if there are enough people interested.

If you would like to apply, please return this expression of interest form. If you have any questions contact Fidelma at f.carolan@unison.co.uk
