OU Tasters This Week

Open University Taster sessions will be held on Wednesday (24th) in at Muckamore and in Belfast City Hospital and on Friday (26th) in Newry & Mourne Trust. They are open to all UNISON Members.

These tasters are designed to link members into continuing professional development opportunities in health care. Sessions this week will be held in

Muckamore Abbey Hospital
“Mental Health: Care and Support issues for Mental health Workers” on Wednesday May 24th from 1 - 2pm in the seminar room. The workshop is a taster based on the Open University module Mental Health and Distress: Perspectives and Practice K257 which includes reflecting on the role of mental health practitioners and the role of others in responding to people who have mental health problems. The session will be delivered by Kate Doyle, OU tutor.

Belfast City Hospital
“Dealing with Death & Dying in Health Care Settings” . This session will run from 1 - 2pm on Wednesday May 24th in Room 3 of the Henry Moore Building. The session is based on the Open University module Death & Dying K206 which includes understanding and evaluating some concepts used frequently in managing death and dying, such as ‘a good death’, ‘autonomy and dignity’, ‘truth telling’ and ‘partnership and teamwork’. It will be delivered by Mary Cavan, OU tutor.

Newry & Mourne Trust
“Promoting Health: developing effective communication in health care settings” will run from 1 - 2pm in Dromalane House, Newry on Friday 26th May. The session is a taster based on the Open University module Promoting Health: Skills, Perspectives and Practice which includes an opportunity to explore issues, innovations and dilemmas in health promotion, preventive measures, health education and the ‘new public health’. It will be delivered by Sharon Henry, OU tutor.

The events are targeted at nurses, allied health staff, nursing auxiliaries/assistants, health care assistants, student nurses, home care staff, but may be of interest to other staff working in Trusts or private nursing homes. They are open to any UNISON member .
