Gordon Brown scrapped the Home Computing Initiative in last week's budget. This tax break scheme allowed staff to purchase a computer through their employer, and pay for it from their salary. This is a scheme which was about to be run for staff in Down Lisburn Trust, UCHT and United Hospitals Trust, with the plan to roll it out more widely in later in the year. UNISON challenged the DHSSPS to make nurse and social work training more accessible to staff such as home care workers, care assistants, nursing auxiliaries and social work assistants. From October 2006, if the government has its way, anyone under 53 faces having to work on to 65 before getting a full pension, no matter how long you have worked and paid into the Local Government Pension scheme. This means that some UNISON members will get treated unfairly. »more

Violent attacks and harassment of our members in hospitals, homes, schools etc. is on the increase. The recent attack on one of members in the Ulster Hospital brought the issue into the public arena, but verbal and physical violence occurs on a daily basis. This day long course gives members a chance to discuss their experience and look at strategies to deal with it more effectively. »more
