Targeted at: Equality Officers, stewards, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members as well as any member who wants to make a difference
Duration: Half day
This course aims to explore the issues which still face lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members in our workplaces despite the legislation which has been introduced. Heterosexism is endemic and members report that discrimination is often subtle rather than blatant and can be hard to challenge. UNISON opposes any member being made to feel uncomfortable or their professionalism being called into question because of their sexuality.
The course will look at myths and stereotypes and give you an understanding of the legislation which can be invoked. Heterosexism is the presumption that everyone is heterosexual and is reflected in language and attitudes as well as informal policies which exist.
Tutor: Fidelma Carolan & LGBT Committee member
