Workshop - Making Sense of Spirituality in Health Care Practic
Professor Wilf McSherry will engage participants in the exploration of the role of spirituality in end of life care. Wilfred McSherry, is a nurse who has a dual role as Professor in Dignity of Care for Older People, Staffordshire University, and a practicing nurse in Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.
Guest Lecture
It will be argued that the challenge for all working in health care is how we reintegrate spirituality and dignity in care so that those primary and founding values are again at the heart of all we do
The phrase ‘treatment versus care’ is an excerpt of transcript taken from an interview with a middle aged gentleman who was dying from terminal lung cancer. These words are quite prophetic because they illustrate that patients want more than just technical competence and proficiency. This gentleman was able to distinguish between treatment and care by suggesting he received treatment in the hospital and care in the hospice. The phrase while seeming contradictory is self evident from the patient’s position. Therefore, this lecture will explore what we mean by ‘treatment’ and ‘care’ presenting some reasons why these have been displaced.
