Nutritional Requirements for Older People

This course is part of our Continuing Professional Development programme. The course will look at how members can support older people to in residential, acute and home settings to maintain good nutrition. It will look at issues of hydration, good nutrition and ways to encourage older people to eat. It will also explore the impact of nutritional deficits on older people.

Older people in acute and residential settings are at risk of ill health due to reluctance or inability to eat and drink sufficiently. Dehydration in particular has been identified as a key issue which is affecting health of older people.

• Basics of nutrition
• Use of supplements
• Techniques for monitoring fluid and calorie intake
• Techniques for supporting older people to consumer more
• The role of catering staff

The use of case studies will help participants link theory to practice and discuss ways of developing strategies for supporting older people in acute and residential settings.
