Bonding, Attachment and Infant Mental Health – The Foundations of our Well-Being across the Life-Span
This one-day seminar will introduce participants to the fundamental ideas underpinning the huge interest today in security of emotional attachment in infancy and in early intervention. The importance of bonding and attachment was first written about some sixty years ago. It is only in recent years however that these ideas have really gained currency due to the remarkable degree of corroboration from child developmental research and in particular from the discoveries of neuro-science about the growth of the infant brain.
Participants will be introduced to these ideas and will also learn how attachment and baby brain development are determined by the quality of the parent-infant relationship – that the security of emotional attachment nurtured by this relationship in the first three years of life is of critical importance therefore for all later social, emotional, cognitive and physical development – this includes the capacity for empathy, for meaningful social relationships, for resilience and for self-control (emotional self-regulation).
The presentation will include use of hand-outs, PowerPoint and DVDs.
It will be delivered by Eamon McMahon who is a family therapist working in a specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and is chairperson of the Association for Infant Mental Health. He is also secretary of Trade Union Friends of Palestine.
