Alternative Education

Targeted at: members working with young people
Duration: Half day

Lagan Valley Education Project grew directly out of the ‘Troubles’. Young people who were not attending school were in danger of suffering punishment beating at the hands of paramilitary vigilantes so two community workers embarked on a process of inviting some of these vulnerable young people to come in off the streets and engage in educational activities.

This initiative has grown in strength and is now endorsed and funded by education and social care authorities. What makes it extraordinary is that it is located in an exclusively Catholic area but caters for Protestants as well as Catohlics. The Project is based on a desire to improve life chances for young people, regardless of their religion. But inevitably setarainism has to be confronted because most of the young people who attend come from polarised communities and do not have opportunities to meet peers who belong to other faith communities.

This seminar is based on interviews with young people and staff. It explores the impact of education outside school - socially and emotionally as well as intellectually.

It will be delivered by Helen Evans, Open University
