ICT for Activists

Targeted at: Any activist who would like to use a computer to be a more effective steward/activist
Duration: 2 days

Can you ~• Use the internet to get information you need to be an effective steward?
• Use email, set up mailing groups, contact lists etc?
• File, search and retrieve files on your pc or on the web?

If the answer is no to any of these then you need to come on this course

Introduction
This course is aimed at UNION representatives who need to increase their ICT skills in relation to the internet, email and filing & storing information on a pc or the web.

It is very important for a steward to be able to access the latest information and resources available on the web. Equally a rep will need to be able to use email effectively; sending information to groups of members etc. This one day course is designed to cover the web, email and storing and searching essentials.

Course Aims

The Internet

o Do effective web searches to find sites and information relating to a trade union issues
o Download files and images from the internet
o Select a union web site and describe its strengths and weaknesses
o Copy information and links from the internet for use in other applications

E Mail
o Setup and email if you don’t currently have one
o Send an email with attachments to a union member
o Set up and manage email contacts
o Set up folders to manage emails
o Send an email to a distribution list of union members
o Understand how CC and BCC can be used to keep a union member informed

File Management

o Look at how Windows manages documents, images, video and music
o Set up an effective file management system for you as a rep
o Do effective searches to find files and folders you have created
o Understand file sizes and how Windows handles different files such as word, pdf, zip
