On Thursday 19th April an important Conference - ‘Carers and Recovery’ - hosted by CAUSE and the Western Health & Social Care Trust will take place in the Mellon Country Inn, Omagh. The Conference will also feature Lu Duhig, a carer working with the Family Intervention in Psychosis Service in Avon and Wiltshire to promote carers’ issues. Lu has developed several projects to improve carer awareness, and will address the issue of ‘partners in care’. Lu will also launch the Carer’s Information Guide which CAUSE has produced and adapted for use in Northern Ireland. »more

Sperrin Lakeland Trust has a number of places on the Open University Pre-Reg Adult Nursing diploma course. This is a workbased course which enables participants to gain a professional nursing qualification without having to give up your job. »more

Ever thought about going back to learning as an adult? Learn a new skill, take up a hobby, improve your career prospects? There are hundreds of courses to chose from at Fermanagh, East Tyrone and Omagh Colleges of Further & Higher Education. Some courses such as Essential Skills are free, short courses can start at as little as £4 per class, with concession rates available if you are on benefits including working tax credit or over 60. »more

The Open University K100 Understanding Health & Social Care course is proving incredibly popular within Sperrin Lakeland Trust and Trust management continue to support staff to access the programme jointly with UNISON. Forms are currently available if you are interested in starting this course in October. Information sessions will run on July 4th & 6th, with the deadline for applications on July 20th. »more

UNISON challenged the DHSSPS to make nurse and social work training more accessible to staff such as home care workers, care assistants, nursing auxiliaries and social work assistants. Pamela Dooley from UNISON highlighted the inequality of access to provision, “We have many experienced members in the health service who would love to progress into the professions, but the opportunities aren’t there” »more
