The University of Ulster is offering an opportunity to activists, professionals and participants in the community sector to convert their hard won experience into university credits in order to gain an honours degree. The university has a long history of widening access, removing barriers and being imaginative in enabling people to study at degree level.
The short course Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) is designed with the community sector in mind. It is a week long intensive course (14-18 May 2007) that will provide the opportunity for people with substantial experience in the community and voluntary sector to convert experience into university credits.
Successful completion of the APEL and the guided submission of a portfolio allows a student to seek direct to the second year of the BSc Hons Community Development. This degree programme is offered weekly during term time on Wednesdays (Sept 2007 - May 2008).
One current student of this programme says, ‘the community Development degree must be one of the most relevant courses it is possible to do for my future. The APEL is a fantastic opportunity to have all your experience recognised .Don’t worry about going to university the support is fantastic.’ There can be nor higher recommendation.
