A range of entry level courses are being offered in Foyle and Altnagelvin from January 2007. If you don’t already have a GCSE/O’Level in English and Maths, then Essential Skills through IT or Essential Skills Numeracy could be for you. These courses give you a qualification up to Level 2 which is comparable to GCSE English and Maths (c grade) and meets some of the criteria for entry onto the OU and UU Nursing course.
The Essential Skills through IT covers areas such as sentence structure, grammar, spelling and report writing, as well as basic computer skills including internet, email, typing on a screen, editing text and printing text.
The Essential Skills Numeracy explores the basics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, percentages and fractions. Up to Level 2, it also includes ratio, area, volume and reading statistics.
Both courses run over 16 weeks in three hour sessions.
Both these courses are aimed at adult learners and feedback from past learners has included “I really got over my lifetime fear of maths, because someone told me I wasn’t very good at it when I was young - thanks to the class, I’ve just got a place on the Open University nursing programme”.
