1. What does Community Heart do?

Community H.E.A.R.T. (Health Education And Reconstruction Training), is a UK based registered charity, which supports health, education and reconstruction training projects in South Africa based on the principle of self-help. They run a book collection scheme, support a children’s art project in Soweto, a mobile health clinic, a Science learning bus and a Rape Crises project as well as providing PCs and books directly to schools in South Africa. Information about their work is available at the Community Heart website

2. Why did you choose Community Heart as your charity?

Supporting Community Heart has already been endorsed by UNISON’s National Executive. As it is a charity which focuses on giving books and learning opportunities the Northern Ireland UNISON Education Committee felt that it was a suitable charity for the ULearn website. More information is available at http://www.unison.org.uk/campaigns/communityheart.asp

3. How can I support Community Heart?

There are a number of ways you can help. Funds will be raised every time you buy something from Amazon and go to the site by clicking the link on the front page of ULearn. Community Heart collects books to send over to schools through South Africa. Each book costs approximately 10p to send, so they ask for donations of books and funds to help this work. The type of books they are looking for are Pre-reading material (‘Picture and a word’); Easy Readers (Large print and big books); Story books; Children’s novels; Factual books; Reading scheme books; Dictionaries (especially illustrated ones); Encyclopaedias. UNISON in Northern Ireland will be setting up central book collection points – sign up for our E-Newsletter to find out where they will be. You could also organise a fundraising event through your local UNISON branch e.g. a tablequiz. You can tell other people who shop with Amazon to go through this site.

4. How does using Amazon from this site help a charity?

The ULearn website has signed up to an affiliate scheme with Amazon. This means that each time someone clicks through to Amazon from our site and buys something, Amazon gives us a small percentage of that transaction. UNISON in Northern Ireland has decided to donate any funds generated to the charity Community Heart.

5. Why does Amazon do this?

Amazon wants as many people as possible to click onto their site and use it to purchase their range of products – books, DVDs, electronic goods etc. They use the affiliate scheme to generate more traffic to their website and hopefully more income for them. They then pay us, it’s a type of advertisement.

6. Why did ULearn choose Amazon?

Amazon does offer an extremely wide range of books and you can also sometimes purchase second hand copies. We chose it because it’s a well know online brand and is already used by charities.
